Modest Is Hottest (Part 2)
Last week we talked about the different types of modesty. (If you missed last weeks Part 1, be sure to click here.) I added some cute little funny pics and GIFs and I also added, to each, what I thought those definitions mean. This week, I thought we should focus on the most important part of modesty. What the bible has to say about each type! So, without further ado...Modest Is Hottest Part 2!
_____________________________________________________
Definition #1- The quality or state of being unassuming or moderate in the estimation of one's abilities
So last week I basically talked about how this definition of modesty pertains to how we view both ourselves and others. Not wanting to raise ourselves up in order to gain attention or make ourselves feel better. Let's see what the Bible says regarding these things....
"This is what the Lord says: "Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding of me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight," declares the Lord"
-Jeremiah 9:23-24 NIV
This one focuses the most on not bragging about earthly or selfish things, but instead bragging about Christ and His great kindness, justice and righteousness. So next time you think about flaunting that new outfit (girl, don't worry, I do it too!) or that wad of cash you just got from mowing someones lawn, think of how much it's going to do for you while it's left here and you're partying it up with Jesus in heaven!
"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full."
-Matthew 6:2 NIV
Once again, this one warns against trying to build yourself up by flaunting the great deeds you have done. It is good to help others, the Bible actually encourages us to care for others. But, sometimes we use that just to put on a "show." We should go about doing these things without trying to bring attention to ourselves. So, next time you deliver that casserole to a sick mother and her kids, or pay it forward at your local Starbucks, try to keep it between yourself, that person and God and see how much better you feel about helping in order to help. Not helping to gain selfish satisfaction.
Definition #2- The quality of being relatively moderate, limited, or small in amount, rate, or level
If the picture hasn't already explained this one, it talks about humbling yourself when it comes to things in life instead of thinking you're the queen (or king) of everything. So, what does the Bible have to say about this one?
"Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love."
-Ephesians 4:2 NIV
This one is pretty straight forward, be kind to people, loving them no matter what. (Yes, even the person who we look at with disgust...they need love too!)
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourself, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus."
-Philippians 2:3-5 NIV
Yes, that said exactly what you read. Do not do things out of selfishness but instead, think of others and what they might need. This is really hard to do, America is full of fast paced things and ungodly satisfaction that we all strive to go for. But, have you ever stopped the fast pace and slowed down to notice the others around you? Something that has truly helped me in this journey has been stepping back and realizing what a blessing the people in my life are. We take others for granted, the lady working behind the counter at McDonald's or the guy who held open the door for you at work when you were running late. Maybe it's time we slow down and appreciate those around us, humbling ourselves enough to just stop and say thank you. Who knows, you could really use the light of God to shine a blessing into that persons life!
Definition #3- Behavior, manner, or appearance intended to avoid impropriety or indecency
This is the modesty that most people think of when they hear that word. Covering up our skin in a manner that isn't enticing to others. So, what is the Bible's definition of this type of modesty?
"Your beauty should not come form outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelery or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight."
-1 Peter 3:3-4
So, looking at what The Word has to say about modesty, it shows that it has to do with the inner most part of you, not the outside. So wearing jewels and new clothes, in comparison to the greatness inside of you, is nothing. This is a good thing to remember sometimes! Especially for us girls, we want to look great for special occasions! And, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. We want to be presentable, but we don't want to be overbearing. Our focus needs to be on "accessorizing" our heart, with kindness, humbleness and love. Not accessorizing our outfits or faces.
"Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised."
-Proverbs 31:30
This has to be one of my favorite memory verses! It is a GREAT reminder to me that the beauty I have on the outside will one day be replaced, but the beauty on the inside will remain forever! What a great promise :)

So, we've taken two posts now to look more closely at what modesty means from our dictionaries and from God's Word. Next time I'm going to share how modesty has played a part in my life and that I've learned from it! Hope you've enjoyed this series so far and if you have any questions feel free to reach out to me and ask! ALSO, I'm looking for some new topics for my blog...it can be ANYTHING you want! So, if you have any suggestions let me know! Thanks :)
