For, Not Against
I’m not one to get into politics on social media, honestly, I’m the last person. It confuses me too much and I don’t have any desire to start anything with anyone, for fear they may confuse me more. But, that is not what this blog is going to be about. This blog is going to be about the ads put out during this time of year. So, hear me out before you slide your screen over and swipe this page up.
We as people urge acts of kindness every single day. It’s expected of us as children, it’s expected of us as adults. To have respect for our fellow human beings, to show them kindness in our differences, and to be an example for the generations that follow us has been ingrained in our heads since we said our first word. “No! Don’t pull your sisters hair! That’s not nice!” “No, we do not name call in this house! It’s unkind and hurts peoples feelings!” “The customer is always right, treat them with respect.” “You need to be a good example for the new employees coming in, so please respect your boss.” And so on and so forth. I’m sure you’ve heard one or more of those sayings in your lifetime, I know I have. So at what point did we instead start to teach people to be unkind? That the only way to win a vote is to bash the competition with unkind things? Just turn on the sports channel, or the news channel, some of the most watched TV channels are filled with ads bashing candidates during this voting season. “Don’t vote for So and So because they said this wrong.” “So and So is against everyone and doesn’t deserve your vote.” “So and So isn’t trying to make America great again, they will steal your freedom.” People are called out by name on TV, for everyone to watch, and then after there name is a list of things wrong with them. Do you know what that means? That means someone felt so strongly about this person that they paid good money to get an ad out on a popular channel so that everyone could watch as this person is talked badly about. And it’s not just one, in the last 20 minutes as I’ve watched sports channel I have seen 15...that’s right, 15 ads talking people down for standing up for what they believe in. We claim to be a place of freedom, yet when someone has a different view then us their freedom no longer counts. It makes me so sad. Where is the kindness? When did we as humans begin to think that the only way to win was to push everyone down? And this isn’t even about who votes for who, this is something that happens every day to people.
I wish that people could be kind again, to show others respect, and to have less hate. Maybe that’s me imaging some perfect little world. But it makes me so sad to see everyone so hurtful. I read a quote once that said, “If what you said appeared on your skin for the rest of your life, would you still say it?” When you are laying on your death bed, and you look back on your life, will you see elaquent words that you shared with others that built them up? Or will you see words that you regret saying?
Tell me this, will you be for others or against? Everyone has differences, that’s what makes us unique! If we were all the same what a boring world this would be. Let’s learn to be for each other, not against each other. Let’s start to make kindness more popular then ads that bash people. Let’s try and win people over, not by bringing others down, but by simply being ourselves and celebrating our difference in a humble way. Let’s stand for kindness starting right now, help me remind everyone around what building people up looks like. I challenge you this second to start letting kindness be what comes out of your mouth. Even when it’s hard. For, not against...NOT against.
